About Us

LCAG are a mixed bunch of ordinary people with busy lives who have volunteered to make a difference in our neighbourhood and beyond.  Our passion and determination has brought us on a long journey in a short space of time.

How the Group was Formed

A number of residents, whose property is sited on the boundary that surrounds Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park, received notification by leaflet of a Public Meeting at Ledger Lane Junior School, Outwood, on the 12th July 2007 from Councillors - Ward 15.  Although there was a very short lead time, with only a couple of days notice given, the word spread quickly and more people than first envisaged attended the meeting.

During the meeting those present shared ideas about how the Park should be improved and discussed issues regarding lack of maintenance and problems of antisocial behaviour, congregating youths with alchohol, litter, graffiti, motor bikes and fishing in the pond (both are prohibited on site) and lack of consultation in general from the Council particularly about trials with biodiversity.  Then came the crucial piece of information regarding 1986 Council scheme proposals.  They included that the Playing Fields area would be designated PAD, Presumption Against Development, land with housing development expected as a long term development after 15 to 20 years consolidation.  This period of time was about expired.  Therefore, the site required protection if we had any plans to improve and maintain the Park.

Names of people interested in getting involved were gathered at the end of the meeting.  A small group of people subsequently got talking and met on a regular basis in order to make progress.  The group organised a further Public Meeting at Bevin Close Community Centre, Outwood, on 1st August 2007.  At this meeting there were no objections to this group of people forming the Committee and they were later adopted as the Interim Committee.

We agreed to name ourselves Lofthouse Colliery Action Group but accepted that should our projects and campaigns expand the reference to Colliery might be amended to Community or Change.
