Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park

Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park is 33.5 hectares of open space situated in the heart of West Yorkshire, north of the city of Wakefield, near to junction 41 Industrial Estate off the M1 motorway.  It is a Park where nature, wildlife and informal recreation live side by side in an urban oasis.

Following the closure of Lofthouse Colliery in 1982, Wakefield Metropolitan District Council supported the site’s reclamation from 1986 using various sources of funding and has continued to maintain the Park for leisure and recreation for the enjoyment of the local community.

Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park offers open free access which is ideal for walking, cycling and has designated bridleways for horse riding.  The nature area incorporating a balancing pond is perfect for picnicing and bird watching and the playing fields accommodates amateur sport and provides a village green area for local community pastimes and events.

Sustainable conservation management practices are in place to reflect Northern England flora and fauna.  Local knowledge gained by Countryside Conservation Services is shared to the advantage of Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park.

Environmental and historical education is promoted and encouraged for the benefit of local children and all members of the Community, both young and old.

The ability to freely visit a place, which is clean, green and safe, is paramount to the health and well being of the immediate surrounding Communities of Lofthouse Gate and Outwood.
